Thoughts from Taylor: This image was inspired by the timelessness of Grateful Dead music and all the journeys into the infinite it takes us on. It also has personal meaning to me. I grew up sailing with my family on a boat that was originally named Dark Star. Though my parents weren’t Deadheads, they bought the boat from a family friend who was. I took my dad to the August 1 show to celebrate his 80th birthday, and it meant a lot to me to finish this art for him. I consulted with him multiple times while finishing the details on the ship, employing his expertise to find a balance between accuracy and aesthetics, and it was a lot of fun sharing that process with him.
I spent the last two weeks of July working on this art while home for the break before the final shows, but the concept is something I put together during the pandemic. I worked on it a ton during the early months of 2021, and then it sat mostly untouched until I had the opportunity to submit it to Dead & Company.
